Stars Mock Clint Eastwood’s Republican National Convention Speech on Twitter
Clint Eastwood’s rambling, offbeat 12-minute appearance at the closing night of the Republican National Convention in Tampa so upstaged the rest of the event (including nominee Mitt Romney’s acceptance speech a half hour later) that it was all anyone watching could talk about. That included celebrities, who watched as the 82-year-old screen legend argue with...Read more»

Fantasica blends role-playing, tower defense and trading cards into one on mobile
In keeping with ngmoco's recent fascination with mobile trading card games, the developer has just announced the launch of Fantasica on iOS and Android devices. Fantasica combines gameplay elements from multiple genres, including role-playing and tower defense, and then mixes those in with a trading card mechanic and artwork from Final Fantasy art director Hideo Minaba.
Fantasica's obvious fantasy setting sees players taking on the role of adventurer in a land of the same name as they can complete over 200 quests and timed events, like the Demon's Tower event that has been launched to celebrate the game's release. Players will collect cards and create an army that can battle against both computer controlled and real world players. Each battle is presented in real-time, with monsters appearing from the edge of the screen and your warriors attacking them automatically, whether they're an archer, warrior, mage or otherwise.
%Gallery-163755%
In this way, each card represents a member of your army, which can level up and earn increase stats, and the battles themselves play as tower defense rounds, as you'll simply drag your units onto the field and watch the battle unfold. Fantasica is free to play, but users can spend real money on additional cards, potions and more. If tradition holds true here, it's likely that new cards and new events will be launched in the game for weeks or even months to come, so interested gamers are encouraged to get in on the ground floor. If you'd like to try Fantasica for yourself, you can now do so by downloading the game on either iTunes or Google Play.

Have you tried Fantasica on either iOS or Android? What do you think of this latest installment in ngmoco's series of trading card games? Sound off in the comments.

The skinny on JetSet Secrets, EA's first hidden-object social game [Exclusive]
Not only is JetSet Secrets the company's first hidden-object game on Facebook, but also its first original property on the platform since PopCap came out with Solitaire Blitz and Outernauts by Insomniac Games. EA's Group GM for Mobile & Social California studios Aaron Loeb recently gave us all the details:
Hit us with the elevator pitch for JetSet Secrets on Facebook.
JetSet Secrets is our new hidden-object game with a light RPG element, but set in a glamorous and playful world, where you're the world's greatest detective traveling the globe, solving high-end crimes and thwarting the plans of various evil nemeses. It's a fun, fast-paced, light hearted tone. A big part of our effort is in making the artwork really pop, and to make sure that everything you do is gorgeous and everywhere you go is aspirational and exciting. Can you tell us more about this light RPG element to JetSet Secrets?
Because you're a detective, you're building out the estate of your big swanky mansion. You're an incredibly famous, rich detective. The estate builder portion is somewhat similar to what you've seen in some other HOG [hidden-object games], but in this case, what you've built out affects your gameplay. For instance, you have a whole bunch of staff members in your mansion, so your chef is also a nuclear physicist, your bodyguard is also a medical doctor, your gardener is secretly a world famous art forger, who you once caught in a crime and turned over to the USI.
Each of these folks in your staff have buildings associated with them. So, when you build them, they can unlock different abilities for HOG. The way the economy works in the game is that you can't build absolutely everything, so the player actually needs to make choices, as to which things they want to focus on as a player. For instance, if you build the buildings for your chef, it's all sort of scientific stuff that's giving you better clues, and certain hints during the HOG play. If you're building stuff for your chauffeur, who is also a retired astronaut, you get more energy. If you build stuff for your gardener, you get better drops when playing the HOG, so it's all different choices that you make that actually affect your gameplay. Part of the initial pitch was calling JetSet Secrets "sexy". We've never heard that descriptor for a hidden-object game, so could you speak to that at all?
It's, yeah, it's sort of more like capers going on than it is sort of grim. There's actually nothing ever grim in this game. It's always fast paced, light tone, the characters are always playful with each other there's a lot of witty banter. It's that kind of thing rather than dark and somebody's dead and you have to figure out where the body is. It's never going to be that kind of crime.
The artwork in hidden-object games is usually one of their biggest selling points. What's the art style of this game? How is it going to look?
Yeah, so the themes are pretty much always in some extremely glamorous locations around the globe where, you know, we on the team want to go, where we think our player will want to go too. So, one of our earliest themes was in Cinque Terre. There was somebody on the team had actually been there recently and was like, "It was the most beautiful place I've ever been, we have to have a scene there." Right? That's the kind of thing that will result us putting a scene in the game.
We don't ever want to have a scene that's like in a dark corner in the woodshed where you got to find a nail file. It's always going to be in some place absolutely gorgeous. So, there are scenes set on the sides of mountains overlooking ancient temples, scenes in front of the Hagia Sophia in Turkey. That kind of stuff. Places where you'd want to go if you had an endless amount of money and could travel anywhere. The very first scene is set in a high-end glamor casino inside a cruise ship. Is there anything particularly social about JetSet Secrets?
Yeah, you'll be going and helping more friends solve their cold cases. So each of your friends has an old case file of crimes they've been unable to solve and you go and help them solve those. You then get social points for helping them, similar to those that you in SimCity Social, and you can use those to construct special buildings in the RPG that unlock levels that you couldn't get otherwise. Also, post-release, there are going to be some other exciting social stuff that we're working on right now, starting mostly with helping your friends solve crimes that they can't solve.
I think, having worked in traditional console games, about five years ago--maybe six years ago--we made the switch over to casual games at. I started in, you know, games with a lot of head-shots. We all had kids, so we said we want to have games that we can talk about on the playground and I found it very fulfilling to make games that absolutely anyone could play and had a lot of experience from all sorts of games.
At Smarty Pants, we made of watching people of all age groups playing a game together and learning just how difficult it is to make something simple, particularly coming from core games. So, that experience has been very influential. But the other key part is from before, prior to making games in the editorial side, our senior producer of the game, Jim Preston, actually worked with me in editorial at The Daily Radar. He actually went on to PC Gamer. So, Jim and I were making and writing video game websites--like you do--over a decade ago and got great experience in direct feedback from our users, especially when it came to console games.
Your client releases the game, then you would go to the forums to see what some small percentage of people thought about it, and it's always that they hate you. And it was, of course, James. But in editorial, you get emails everyday from your users. You're actually seeing what they're reading, you learn things from the reader, kind of what they find most interesting, from what they're telling you, also by watching the patterns. And that has obviously direct applications on games that live on the web, right? You can actually learn from the user what they find most interesting, which I find to be incredibly rewarding. Are there any plans for cross-platform and mobile with JetSet Secrets?
I think, you know, everybody who makes these sorts of games are thinking about that sort of thing right now. I can't talk about any specific plans, but we are, in the 15 years that I've been in video games, in the most exciting period I've seen, where the user kind of is able to pick up any device and play anywhere and is, has huge amount of access to content. So much is free now and so cheap. It certainly is incredibly exciting to figure out the way to treat our users. I have some teams that work with me at EA who are mobile teams as well, we're certainly, we're constantly looking at that sort of thing.
Just a quick thing to share: I know that in our previous talk, I said that the game was primarily developed in San Francisco. It was also developed by our teams in Salt Lake City, so they've been working as part of our team. It's been across locations, and the Salt Lake City folks are awesome and deserve their shout-outs.
JetSet Secrets launches on Facebook soon. Click here to learn more.

Keeping Up With the FarmVillians: The reality of staying happy on the farm
This week, I had to make an important decision regarding my DVR. The season finale of True Blood and The Real Housewives of New Jersey were conflicting with Keeping Up With the Kardashians ... again. But wait, didn't this just happen last week, and the week before that as well? Since the vampires of True Blood are always victorious over reality stars, I'm left with both reality shows fighting for my viewership, and I can't help but think this would be an awesome brawl if the RHONJ actually threw down with the Kardashian clan.
Anyways, it occurred to me that due to my favorite Sunday night shows' scheduling conflicts, and the little time I have to commit to watching them, mixed in with full-time FarmVille coverage and my 2-year-old son, I was no longer keeping up with the Kardashians. At all. In fact, I was dangerously close to the point of no return when it comes to leaving a TV series behind for good. A few missed episodes become seasons and then seasons turn into my Grey's Anatomy. (Is McDreamy still around? I'm forever lost in Season 4 limbo).
One of the most common complaints I hear from FarmVille players is that too much is happening in FarmVille. Farmers who aren't able to visit the farm daily are finding that a lot happens in a matter of 24 hours. Here are just a few of the big releases from the past week:
Aside from the usual FarmVille Market updates of new Limited Edition items, there were 10 brand new Space-themed crops to plant. Before you get caught up in Mercury Melons and Moon Flowers, note that you'll need to Master them in succession. In other words, each crop has a specific mastery prerequisite in place where you will need to master one crop before you can unlock the next tier.
Good thing that FarmVille made it an unexpected Double Mastery week where you can earn double Mastery Points on crops (and trees) if you found the time to take advantage of planting any of the new Space crops. It takes will power to ignore those quest crops, but it's much easier when the quest is asking you to plant Eggplants for the 100th time despite mastering this crop three years ago. Hello, can we at least get some Super Eggplants over here?
Note: Destination farms' unique Crafting Buildings count towards the three-building limit. For example, if you have an English Pub on your English Countryside farm, then you can have two additional Crafting Buildings and make your choice from the Bakery, Spar, or Winery, but you may not have all four. FarmVille sweetened the deal by releasing new crafting recipes to help you get started in your new endeavors as a baker, spa specialist or winemaker. Add it to the list of your FarmVille accomplishments.
Turn your Coins into Farm Cash
High Roller Spending & Hawaiian Paradise Surprise
Toward the end of the week everyone was surprised to see a new series of quests added to Hawaiian Paradise farm. Occasionally, FarmVille likes to keep us on our toes when most of us think it's safe to casually forget a farm. The new series of Hawaiian Paradise quests is unusually long with difficult requirements that include high crop harvests and triple the recipe crafting and if that wasn't bad enough, the rewards are not that great, to say the least. In fact, most of them are old re-released prizes. Blah.
Drive To End Hunger
Once you send a friend the Tractor Pig gift, you will receive a Grocery Tree for yourself as a bonus. All of the proceeds will go to Drive To End Hunger. Outside the virtual farming world, FarmVille and NASCAR fans were treated to another surprise this weekend when #24 Jeff Gordon's car raced this weekend decked out in a special FarmVille + Drive To End Hunger paint job. A FarmVille first for sure.
For die-hard FarmVille players who play daily, this may prove to be more difficult than keeping up with FarmVille (or the Kardashians). It is often these players who strive to complete every quest, challenge, voting event, construction project, and still work on new masteries or hobby breeding. Doing it all is a lot of work and can become quite time consuming.
Trying to keep up can be overwhelming for some players, who may feel defeated when attempting to do everything in FarmVille, especially when it takes the enjoyment out of playing. I hear this a lot, "FarmVille is becoming WorkVille".
If this is true for you, maybe it's a good time to reconsider the way you play and instead, focus on the things that are important to you. Consider skipping certain quests if you don't like the rewards. If you find that planting rice or bell peppers for the millionth time is annoying because you mastered these crops years ago, then, consider skipping the quest. Instead, plant a crop you've been dying to master. Get back to the basics.
The mere idea of skipping something may make some players cringe, but if you find yourself not enjoying an aspect of the game, just remember everything is optional -- do something for yourself and for your own enjoyment.

FarmVille maker says goodbye to yet another executive ... sort of
"I'm very proud of my part in building this remarkable company, especially in growing and nurturing what has become a vibrant community of game designers, producers, and creative leaders. These are the people who will create the entertainment experiences of the future," Verdu wrote. "Now, however, it's time for me to try something new. Being at Zynga in the early days reminded me of how much I love being an entrepreneur. After a lot of soul-searching, I have decided to go back to my roots and start a new company."
Inside Social Games reports that Verdu's new company will be supported by Zynga as its first investor, so it's likely we'll see more of the former CCO's work through, say, Zynga's game publishing program. Verdu has nothing more to say of his new venture at the moment, but given his pedigree in the games industry, it will most likely involve games--ahem--interactive entertainment.

Music Monday: Girl Groups
Happy Music Monday! It's a crisp, new day, and everyone's full of joy and excitement. Sorta makes you want to sing, right? And when you think of singing, you think of… girl groups! Or at least Scott does. Today you're gonna rock out with girl groups throughout the aged. And here's his first choice to start things off!
The Dum Dum Girls - He Gets Me High
Welcome to the 21st Century, where girl groups can play guitars! The Dum Dum Girls combine the old-fashioned girl group melody (check out that glorious soaring chorus!) with the electric fire of biker rock. Not to mention, if you can improve on The Smiths you're already a freakin' rock star. Well done, ladies! You've taken the "girl group" to a higher level.
More female-centric rock and pop comin' up, along with our Spotify playlist, right after the jump.
Before we move forward, remember our new Spotify playlist will be featuring a great selection from last week's Music Monday comments. The theme of the mix this time is Summer Romance and boy, it'll break your heart. But you'll be stronger for it in the end. Just please check out our current Music Monday before you recap those old memories. And speaking of which...
Of course this 2003 band is wearing their references on the sleeves they don't have, but that doesn't make them any less charming. The mix of tunesmithing and cheerleading offers the same atmosphere as those classic girl groups from the '60s, though perhaps a little more Spice Girly than most of the century before. (Be aware that in the video above there's a pixeled-out body part showing up a few times, if that sort of thing would make your boss uneasy.)
Even today, hearing a few notes from this song calls up a magical time of weird hair and synthesizers. This song brings new meaning to the words "radio-friendly" but it also doesn't sacrifice quality. Hold your head high, women of rock! And we'll just overlook most of the solo stuff.
The Ronettes - Walking In The Rain
Hands down my favorite Phil Spector production. The fake thunder, the in-your-face Wall of Sound, the backup singers that seem to be out in the hall, and Ronnie Spector's heartbreaking voice. Not to mention, it's not as overplayed as some other girl group hits. No disrespect, The Crystals.
The Pointer Sisters - Yes We Can
Go on, stomp along at your desk. This song was made for groovin' to. You might be more familiar with some poppier hits from these real-life sisters, but back when their style was still "what we found at the thrift store that morning" and they had nothing their voices and their talent and their hope... Well, this song isn't so much a song as a conversation with the audience. And it's great.
So maybe you've got a favorite female-focused group of your own. And maybe you'll want to throw that in the comments below. Then maybe you'll just us in our Turntable.fm room for the regular Music Monday enjoyment. Hey, we can dream, can't we? Also, let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use.

Sean University: A walk in the parking!
But when you’re a business and all your employees have cars, then it gets complicated. It’s up to you as the business owner to provide them with a place to leave all their cars. This area is traditionally called a “parking lot” because there’s a lot of thought that goes into each one.
That’s right: you can’t just be like, “Parking lot’s anywhere behind that tree over there.” You need to be really thorough. You need to inspect the land you want to put the parking lot on so you know for certain it’ll work. Not sure what to look for? Well, no worries! We here at The Sean Adams University of Business Management Development Leadership can help. Here are some red flags that will reveal your spot’s poor parking potential:
Lava: Sure in a perfect world, you could set it up so that lava is allowed in certain spaces and cars in others! But no! That’d be too much to ask of that molten hot diva! It wants to go wherever it wants, whenever it wants! So lame!
Actually not land but a cloud: You just went on a long business trip and now you’re flying home. On your final approach, you see this lush white field with nothing on it and you think, “Oh man, there’s so much space for parking up there!” But there’s really not. Because that’s not land, it’s a cloud. And you can’t pave on water vapor (yet!).
Booby traps: This one’s tough, because if the booby traps are really good, you won’t be able to tell that they’re there until it goes off. That’s why you need to use one of your disposable cars and disposable employees to test every parking lot you build.
Someone else’s parking lot: You know that thing you’d do with a baseball bat, where one person would put his hand on it, and then the other person would put his hand on top of that, and so on and so on until you got to the end of the bat and whoever was on top won? You can’t do that with parking lots.
Cliffs: Okay, so it’s more complicated than “no cliffs.” The top ledge part of the cliff is sorta okay for a parking lot, but the cliff part is a no go. Not sure which part you’re on? No worries: there’s an easy test. Are you standing? Then you’re on the ledge part! Are you falling? That’s the cliff part. Don’t try to pave that part.
Those are our parking tips! Now, if you've got any of your own, share them in the comments!

J&D's Bacon Coffin
Last Call for Bacon: Smoke It If You Got It
When they said "you can't take it with you," they clearly weren't talking about bacon. Rest in slices, bacon meme.
Bacon's greatness is forever. The bacon meme is not. It's time to let bacon be its fabulous self, not a totem of online irony. We're serving up this Woot-Off with a side of bacon, to give this fat-marbled Internet yukfest the oil-spattered Viking funeral that will finally send it off to the great frying pan in the sky.
Yes, we've scoured the nation for bacon-themed novelties, edibles, equipment, and decor to remember the Bacon Boom by. And we're sprinkling it generously throughout this two-day meme eulogy. Then we can all get back to enjoying the flavor of bacon without making a big smirky deal out of it.
Of course bacon is irresistibly delicious. You won't catch us arguing otherwise. But it's time to smash the "bacon thing" to bits. Tuck in a bib and join us in a Last Call for Bacon, won't you? Just don't touch anything without washing your hands first.

Jennifer Garner has played the sweet mom for so long — both on-screen and off — that it’s easy to forget that the former Alias star once had a sharp edge. Pioneer Trail Jack's Mineshaft: Everything you need to know
Frontier Jack has disappeared in a deep and dangerous mine shaft in Pioneer Trail (is there any other kind?) and he needs your help! A new feature has now launched on the outskirts of our Homesteads, allowing players that have reached at least Level 14 to complete a series of goals, earn a new free gift, and ultimately rescue Jack before it's too late. Perhaps we'll even find out why he went mining in the first place...
Missing in Action
- Harvest 30 Squash
- Tend 20 Animals on Neighbors' Homesteads
- Collect 5 Missin' Jack Posters
Rewards: 400 coins, Canary, Diggin Directions (needed to construct the Mineshaft)
A Friend of Mine
- Tend 30 Adult Oxen
- Gather 15 Notes from Jack
- Finish Phase 1 of the Mineshaft
The Notes are found when you clear Grass debris. While you may not need to build a Mineshaft on your own Homestead, you will need to dig into the earth by collecting and crafting ingredients, so this feature definitely isn't a breeze to complete. You'll receive 3 Potato Ready Boosts, 600 coins and 600 XP when you complete this quest.
Meals on Wings
- Craft 6 Miners' Meals
- Gather 40 Mashed 'Taters
- Finish Phase 2 of the Mineshaft
The Mashed 'Taters are dropped at random when harvesting potatoes on your Homestead. Your rewards for finishing this goal are 1,000 XP, a Molten Cake and Cave Coordinates (needed for the Mineshaft).
Chilly Disposition
- Ask for 20 Cushy Bed Rolls
- Gather 30 Wool Blankets
- Finish Phase 3 of the Mineshaft
The Wool Blankets drop when tending Adult Sheep. You'll earn a Fluffy Leader Sheep, 1,400 XP and a Miner's Map for the Mineshaft when you finish this goal.
To the Rescue
- Tend 20 Adult Canaries
- Ask for 15 Miner's Hats
- Finish the Mineshaft
The Canary is an animal that can be found on the game's free gifts page. You'll have at least one from completing the first goal in this series, and hopefully, your friends will send you enough to make it through this goal quickly. When you finish this goal, you'll have completed the entire Mineshaft series and will receive two Crazy Cakes, 2,200 XP and Jack's Mine, which is a decoration for your Homestead to keep after this event is over. Good luck!
