The esteemed cultural critic Sid Vicious said it best: 99% of everything is, um, crap. Actually, he didn’t say crap, he used a stronger word because he lived his life like a free man, not chained to a paycheck writing Internet sales copy like an overeducated trained seal. I hate myself sometimes.

Anyway, I apply Sid’s Law to literally everything in life. Give me a bag of M&Ms and I’ll pick out the one tolerable one and throw away the rest. Hand me a 200-page book and I’ll rip out the best two pages – the other 198 go onto the bonfire. My family members? Sorry, Grandma Karla, we won’t be speaking ever again. Maybe if you had a gun collection as good as Uncle Roger’s, you would have made the cut.

And nothing gets cut more brutally than my own photos. With the Pentax Optio’s 16MP resolution and 18x optical zoom, I don’t have to put up with any extraneous, substandard, offensively worthless pixels crudding up the good 1%. The one acceptable daffodil in a field; the only corner of a mountain landscape that doesn’t utterly suck; the lone tuft of a kitten’s fur that doesn’t fill me with rage. With that powerful optical zoom and all those megapixels to work with, I can pitilessly crop out the crap and still see those things with perfect clarity.

Of course, then I notice that 99% of THOSE pixels are total garbage. So I trim those, and then, yeah, you guessed it… honestly, it’s exhausting. Living like this gives me a whole new respect for Sid Vicious. I don’t know how he kept it up for… wait, only 21 years?
